    01

    Knocked-Out Tooth

    1. 1.Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root.
    2. 2.If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or water. Do not scrub or remove any tissue.
    3. 3.For a permanent tooth, try to place it back in the socket. Have your child bite down on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
    4. 4.If you cannot reinsert the tooth, place it in a cup of milk or your child's saliva.
    5. 5.Contact us immediately — time is critical. The best chance of saving the tooth is within 30 minutes.
    02

    Toothache

    1. 1.Clean the area around the sore tooth thoroughly by rinsing with warm salt water.
    2. 2.Use dental floss to remove any food that may be trapped between teeth.
    3. 3.Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums.
    4. 4.Give your child age-appropriate over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
    5. 5.Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek if there is swelling.
    6. 6.Call our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
    03

    Broken or Chipped Tooth

    1. 1.Rinse the mouth with warm water to keep the area clean.
    2. 2.Apply a cold compress to the face in the area of the injury to minimize swelling.
    3. 3.Try to find and save any broken tooth fragments.
    4. 4.Contact our office immediately for further instructions.
    04

    Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek

    1. 1.Apply firm but gentle pressure with a clean gauze or cloth to stop bleeding.
    2. 2.Apply ice or a cold compress to reduce swelling.
    3. 3.If the bleeding doesn't stop after 15 minutes or cannot be controlled, go to the emergency room.
    05

    Object Stuck Between Teeth

    1. 1.Try to gently remove the object with dental floss. Guide the floss carefully to avoid cutting the gums.
    2. 2.Do not try to remove it with a sharp or pointed instrument.
    3. 3.If you cannot remove the object, contact our office.
    06

    Possible Jaw Fracture

    1. 1.Immobilize the jaw by tying a bandage or towel under the chin and over the top of the head.
    2. 2.Apply a cold compress to control swelling.
    3. 3.Go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
    4. 4.Call our office as soon as possible for follow-up care.

    Prevention is Key

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings can help prevent many dental emergencies. Make sure your child wears a mouth guard during sports activities.
