Knocked-Out Tooth
- 1.Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root.
- 2.If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or water. Do not scrub or remove any tissue.
- 3.For a permanent tooth, try to place it back in the socket. Have your child bite down on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
- 4.If you cannot reinsert the tooth, place it in a cup of milk or your child's saliva.
- 5.Contact us immediately — time is critical. The best chance of saving the tooth is within 30 minutes.
02
Toothache
- 1.Clean the area around the sore tooth thoroughly by rinsing with warm salt water.
- 2.Use dental floss to remove any food that may be trapped between teeth.
- 3.Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums.
- 4.Give your child age-appropriate over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
- 5.Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek if there is swelling.
- 6.Call our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
03
Broken or Chipped Tooth
- 1.Rinse the mouth with warm water to keep the area clean.
- 2.Apply a cold compress to the face in the area of the injury to minimize swelling.
- 3.Try to find and save any broken tooth fragments.
- 4.Contact our office immediately for further instructions.
04
Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek
- 1.Apply firm but gentle pressure with a clean gauze or cloth to stop bleeding.
- 2.Apply ice or a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- 3.If the bleeding doesn't stop after 15 minutes or cannot be controlled, go to the emergency room.
05
Object Stuck Between Teeth
- 1.Try to gently remove the object with dental floss. Guide the floss carefully to avoid cutting the gums.
- 2.Do not try to remove it with a sharp or pointed instrument.
- 3.If you cannot remove the object, contact our office.
06
Possible Jaw Fracture
- 1.Immobilize the jaw by tying a bandage or towel under the chin and over the top of the head.
- 2.Apply a cold compress to control swelling.
- 3.Go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
- 4.Call our office as soon as possible for follow-up care.
Prevention is Key
Regular dental check-ups and cleanings can help prevent many dental emergencies. Make sure your child wears a mouth guard during sports activities.
